Frequently asked questions
What stage of startup is best for this service?
If your company is past the paper napkin stage, but not quite ready for a Series B, this is the ideal service for you. It also works if you are a university tech transfer or spinout project.
How does your product/service work?
We make an appointment to review the deck and 5-minute pitch. You will send the deck and script in advance. The person who will be pitching must lead the meeting, although others from the team can attend. I will review the pitch and give specific, actionable feedback, helping you to overcome critical limitations that cause pitch judges and investors to tune out.
How much does it cost?
The price is fixed at $99.99 per deck. Typically an organization will have two decks, one for presenting onstage, and another for circulating to folks who won't hear you explaining the content. It helps sometimes to make custom decks for specific events or audiences.
Do you design decks for visual impact?
No, these services are AI-driven these days, and in general I wouldn't advise spending a lot of time or money on fancy graphics and video clips. Simpler is better.
Will you help with the content for my specific sector?
I've got a long history in information technology, life sciences, energy and cleantech. As long as I can understand the concept behind your technology and business, I will be able to help. If the area is completely foreign to me, and I can't grasp what you're talking about, it's likely that most of your audience will have the same problem. Let's try.
What are your credentials to provide this advice?
I've been the CEO of four companies and the CTO for four other startups since 1995. I've advised more than 40 enterprises on strategy, fundraising and product development. I've worked in very large companies, in tech transfer, for venture funds and angel groups, and I'm currently the CEO for a well-known cleantech international startup. I've been through great accelerator programs (Techstars, CENTECH, Joules Energy, Starburst, FreeElectrons, MassChallenge) and ranked in the top 10 for international pitch competitions around the world (CIX, Entrepreneurship World Cup, Unicorn Startup Battle, TechCrunch, eXtreme Tech Challenge) as well as events for the US Department of Defense (AFWERX and xTechSearch).
Find me on LinkedIn if you must.
Will you help us to raise capital?
I'm happy to share my resources for raising capital and steer you away from the useless paths (hint: don't buy VC or family office lists!). Beyond that, investors at this stage unilaterally expect that it's one of the cofounders dealing with them directly, and not an agent, broker or consultant (that's another major hint worth at least $99). So, no.
Are you trying to upsell consulting or board services?
No, I've got enough to do already, and I don't sell those services. I've been part of more than 75 pitch competitions and I'm tired of seeing good companies and smart entrepreneurs get bypassed because they thought that pitching comes naturally. It doesn't.
